Negative Calorie Foods

The biggest problem people face when trying to lose weight is the hunger that comes with losing fat. One effective way to combat this hunger and lose weight is to eat plenty of negative calorie foods. The theory behind negative calorie foods is that negative calorie foods use up more energy (calories) during digestion than they actually contain. Energy from negative calorie foods foods is much harder to breakdown, meaning the body must work hard to get any energy out of them.

For example a chocolate cookie may contain 200 calories. During digestion your body uses up 50 calories, leaving a net calorie surplus of 150. However consider a serving of cucumber that contains 50 calories. During digestion the body may use 75 calories to break down the cucumber, leaving a net calorie deficit of 25 (note this example is purely for illustrative purposes and is not scientific).

The science behind negative calorie foods is subject to debate. However the results in some studies cannot be disregarded. One such study at the University of California by Dr Dean Ornish, M.D. showed that weight can be lost, without limiting calorie intake or portion sizes, by eating a lot of negative calorie foods. The consumption of negative calorie foods helped participants lose an average of 20 pounds each.

These weight loss results are certainly amazing. Whether or not the weight loss is soley due to the negative claorie food diet is yet to be seen. More research needs to be conducted in this area before any concrete conclusions can be drawn. But with these results in mind, it is hard to question the submission that negative calorie foods can help with weight loss. In addition, almost all negative calorie foods are either fruits or vegetables which have many helath benefits besides helping you to lose weight.
